SHEFFIELD’S
PHIL ROBERTS KEEPS ENGLAND’S STRONGEST MAN 2017 TITLE IN SHEFFIELD
Phil Roberts from Sheffield has made sure the City of Steel retains the
England’s strongest man title for the second year running, won from the
previous title holder Sheffield’s very own Paul Smith. In a bizarre twist both
train at the same facility – Titanium Strength Gym in Sheffield.
The City of steel is living up to its name. Phil 32, was up against a
strong field of contenders from around the country as he battled it out across
such events as a 120kg sack carry, pole push combat, a massive 345kg deadlift
medley, overhead log press and a ridiculous tractor tyre flip over a 20 metre
course weighing over 65 stone in weight!
The competition, which took place in Kent, was part of a qualifier for
channel 5’s UK’s strongest man which sees Sheffield represented again with our
very own local lad.
Phil, standing at 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing in at over 21 stone
is an advocate of hard work. His ability in speed and movement make him an
unusually agile athlete compared to the heavier guys he competes with whilst
not giving away strength.
Been an ex police officer he is also a dab hand at chasing down his
opponents in those events that require speed as well as power. The City of
steel has a real ‘strong’ element of ‘copper’ when it comes to Big Phil. Maybe
that’s why the title has it’s home in Sheffield.
Phil is well capable of lifting cars, pulling buses and trucks as well as
the more traditional lifts associated with gym weightlifting exercises.
Strongman mixes weightlifting with awkward objects, and it seems on the day
City of steel man Phil had more than enough to edge his rivals out.
Phil commented ‘ I have
aspirations in the sport to make it onto the World scene and now I have won
England’s this year I automatically qualify for the UK’ strongest man. I started
off as a novice, won Rotherham’s strongest man 2012, Sheffield’s strongest man
2014, 3rd at England’s strongest man 2016 and now I am the new
strongest man in England. You are not born strong you are trained strong. There
is no secret - its hard, honest work.
Man Beast strongman Events founders Andrew Picken and two times Guinness
World record holding strongman Mark Anglesea commented ‘Phil has proved once
again Sheffield is indeed the home of the Country’s strongest men. Having
collected regional and now National honours both Paul and Phil have kept the
prestigious title in the City where we believe it belongs.
