England’s Strongest Man 2017

Most of us love watching strongmen as they don our TV sets at Christmas. From lifting cars to pulling buses and trucks what these guys can do is pretty phenomenal.
Run by Rebel Strength, on behalf of Glen Ross’s Ultimate Strongman, England’s strongest man doubles up as a UK Qualifier for UK’s strongest man, the top three progressing through to the Belfast final.
The event took place at Deansgate Ridge Athletics Track Rochester on Saturday 24th June.
Events included a gruelling log lift, Giant tyre flip, Deadlift Medley, sandbag loading and a one on one pole push event.
England’s current strongest man, Paul Smith was in a confident mood of defending his title but was up against a strong field of athletes.
The first event, the log press saw both Ryan England and Colin Hawkins lifting the maximum weight of 180kg, whilst other competitors failed to lift above 170kg. Full of confidence Ryan England attempted 200kg and nearly pulled it off which would have been a great press.

Next up saw the tyre flip – a giant tyre weighing approximately 400kg (over 60 stones) that the athletes had to flip across a set distance of around 20 metres. As the sun shone down next up was the Deadlift Medley. The deadlift is a bar that has to be raised off the ground with the back straightened.
This consisted of a starting weight of 300 kg, 315 kg, 330 kg, 345 kg and 360 kg. As the temperature rose so did the pain level as the event took its toll on the athletes. A gruelling event saw top deadlifters being Luke Fullbrook, Dean Evans, Charlie Gough and Sean Logan.
In the penultimate event the sand bag carry, three 120kg sacks were carried over a 20 metre distance – quickest wins. With little breathing space between the events and on tired legs from the deadlift speed was key. The crowd were treated to an exciting mix of power and speed.
Lastly was a strongman classic not seen as much these days – the pole push, a combination of bodyweight, power and technique.
As the crowd gathered around a marked out circle, athletes took hold of a huge pole at either end in a head to head face off. Rules were to use the pole to push your opponent out of the ring.
Phil Roberts and Ryan England took part in three exciting battles that constantly went back and forth as they vied for overall first position, with Phil Roberts eventually getting the upper hand to take the title of England’s strongest man 2017.
In a bizarre twist Phil hails from Sheffield and trains in the same gym as Paul Smith, current England’s strongest man, meaning the City of steel keeps the title for 2 years running.
Top two were Phil Roberts (Sheffield) and Ryan England (Bristol) with Charlie Gough coming third. Paul Smith, current England’s Strongest man came in 7th position overall. Full results below.
