UK Car Deadlift Championship – Stoke man takes the win!
Most of us love watching strongmen as they don our TV sets at Christmas. From lifting cars to pulling buses and trucks what these guys can do is pretty phenomenal. Ryan Bloor from Talke, Stoke on Trent took the win with a mighty 70 car deadlift reps across three rounds.
It’s ironic that the current World’s strongest man, Eddie Hall aka THE BEAST, comes from the City. The potteries seem to be ‘smoking’, sorry ‘stolking’ the competition at the moment.
Run by Man Beast Strongman events, in conjunction with Xplosive Ape 17 National and regional strongman descended on Barnsley Town Centre to battle it out lifting a BMW electric car weighing in at 300 kg ( 50 stone in weight) outside the interchange on Lord Mayors parade day.
England’s strongest man 2016, Paul Smith was the official referee with two times Guinness World Record Holder Mark Anglesea managing the event on the day. Amongst those competing were Mariusz Pillinski, current Yorkshire’s strongest man and crowd favourite Ashton ‘the bear’ Reid – England’s Strongest Junior. 2nd place JUKSM, 2nd place Strongbeach World Championship.
Before the main competition started in the afternoon a charity event took place with a 4 man team lifting the car as many times as possible in an hour for the Scunthorpe Bereavement suite fund. This featured Dan Wilson, Dan Hipkiss, Mark Pearson and the Guinness World record holder Mark Anglesea. A total of 607 reps were completed.
The first round of the main competition saw the athletes take centre stage to lift the car as many times as possible off the ground across a time limit of 2 minutes. Each competitor got 3 rounds of 2 minutes, 90 seconds and 60 seconds to lift the car as many times as possible – a gruelling test of strength and conditioning.
Favourites going in had to be Ashton Reid, Marisuz Pillinski and Sean Logan to claim first place. However Ryan Bloor took the first round with a staggering 29 lifts which took him into the lead followed closely by Sean Logan (28 lifts) and chasing them both down Rotherham’s Duncan Reith claiming 27 reps.
Stevie Speakman made a good account of himself after moving up from the Novice category to take on a heavier weight and managing 6 gruelling reps. Gav Oxby failed to make a lift but didn’t give up with multiple attempts at moving the weight, and Tom Bebb setting a great start as the first competitor to start with 17 reps taken in the first round.
Looking smooth and composed was James Hickey who had travelled over from Ireland to compete and managed a very credible 18 reps without looking strained at all in round one. But it was Ryan, one of the lighter competitors in the field at 17 stone, that was taking on the big boys and grinding out lift after lift.
Barnsley strongman Zac Perry battled it out with Lee Howard with 2 reps between them and this close battle continued throughout the competition. Luke Rushforth and Corey Gardner also made for an interesting battle with little between them in terms of the number of reps.
As round 2 got underway the sun was shining to a rapturous crowd who cheered the guys on through a painful round as grit and determination was as equal as pure strength in pushing the body to lift the car. John Ford, always making it look easy, hit third place with a great effort starting fast and smooth to get as many reps in as possible totalling 68 in total!
Andy Griffiths also made a good showing battling an uncomfortable start to battle through the rounds and come back in round 3 for a final push. Another standout performance came from Nathan Clarke who just missed out on a podium place coming fourth overall with a massive effort culminating in a total of 65 reps!
In the third round all the competitors knew that every ounce of effort and every rep grounded out could take the win – it was that close. The battle between 1st, 2nd and 3rd with the very powerful Sean Logan battling out with Ryan Bloor for first and John Ford always been a danger had the crowd in suspense.
In the end Ryan Bloor put in a huge effort to take first place by 1 rep amassing 70 reps in total, with Sean Logan on 69 reps and John Ford on 68 reps. One point separating all podium finishes setting up a final round that had everyone in suspense.
Ryan commented after the win ‘ My future strength plans are to keep on getting stronger and see how far I can take this.
I started lifting weights in my teens and did my first strongman contest in 2014 after seeing it on social media. I was invited to compete and placed 4th in my first ever comp.
‘Growing up I got in trouble for fighting and finding strongman allowed me to turn that aggression into a positive. I have suffered with mental health and training as sometimes been my only outlet.
All competitors received a Man Beast t-shirt, medal and the winner a trophy and £500 prize money. The crowd then had photos with the athletes as Barnsley hosted the UK’s first Man Beast Car Deadlift championship.
Over £80 was raised for the Scunthorpe Bereavement suite fund and all the competitors entrance fees donated to the British Red Cross solidarity fund to support those affected by the recent terror attacks – totalling £380.
