Peak District Highland
Games Report and Results– Matlock 27th
August 2017
Most of us love watching
strongmen as they don our TV sets at Christmas. From lifting cars to pulling
buses and trucks what these guys can do is pretty phenomenal. However when they
came to Matlock Farm park they competed in the Peak Districts first ever Highland
Games.
Run by
Man Beast Strongman events, in conjunction with Matlock Farm Park National and
regional strongman descended on the Peak District to battle it out across 5
brutal events. This included Giant log press (weight 23 stone), stone carry (30
stones in weight), 8 ton tractor pull, caber toss and stone throw for distance.
England’s
strongest man 2016, Paul Smith was the official referee with Dan Hipkiss and two
times Guinness World Record Holder Mark Anglesea managing the event on the day.
Amongst those competing were Sheffield’s strongest man Simon Knowles, crowd
favourite Ashton ‘the bear’ Reid – England’s Strongest Junior 2nd place JUKSM,
2nd place Strongbeach World Championship.
Log Press
Pressing
the Giant log over the head Ashton made a great start with a total of 6 reps,
but that wasn’t enough to beat the top pressers. It still saw him cement third
place. That accolade went to Simon Knowles with an impressive 7 reps before
Scott Lichfield, feeding off the partisan crowd, hit 8 reps taking the event
win. Dale Peters came in joint fourth with Dave Thornton, sixth Gav Wallace and
Ian and Zac were both unfortunate not to get a rep.
Stone Carry
The
second event was a test of strength and grip which saw a 30 stone in weight
stone carried over 20 metres for the quickest time. Awkward to even lift off
the ground it was Scott Lichfield taking the win again – even dancing with the
stone. Ian Philipps, determined as ever, failed to carry the stone but gave it
is all trying to lift it which the crowd appreciated cheering his efforts on.
Dave Thornton came second with a great run, followed by Simon Knowles in third,
Dale Fourth, Ashton fifth, Zac sixth and Ian and Gav joint seventh position.
Tractor Pull
It
seemed the tractor pull wowed the crowds as spectators lined the course in
their droves. Simon Knowles set a great time of 49 seconds which saw him cement
second place but the star of the event was Dave Thornton who smashed the entire
field with a 41 second time to pull the 8 tonne tractor. The current competition
leader Scott Lichfield came in at a very credible third. Dale Peters came
fourth, Ashton the Bear Reid came fifth, Zac sixth, Ian Phillips 7th,
Gav Wallace 8th.
The Caber toss – a
classic Highland Games event – was a 2 attempt event to allow the less
experienced athletes to master the technique of ‘tossing’ the caber. The caber
is a giant wooden pole that needs to be thrown and rotate in the air. Winner is
the farthest distance with a full rotation of the pole.
It was
Scott Lichfield that took first place again followed by Zac Perry in second who
put an awesome effort in. Both competitors have experience from competing in
the Yorkshire Highland game 2016 but in true strongman style competitors gave
the less experienced tips on how to throw the caber.
Sheffield’s
strongest man, Simon Knowles secured third place, chasing down Scott Lichfield
to ensure a tight finish, with Dave Thornton coming fourth, Ian Phillips and
Dale Peters joint fifth, Ashton Reid 7th and Gaz Wallace 8th.
Stone Throw
The
last event saw the stone throw which is a strongman version of shot put. A 22kg
stone thrown for distance. Many of the athletes took for the over-head stance
but Zac Perry seemed to be the throwing event specialist here. The other
athletes struggled to match the 7 metre throw by Zac. His second attempt was
deemed over the line by officials, but that didn’t matter as that distance took
the win.
Scott
Lichfield came second with 7.6 metres and Simon Knowles on 7.4 metres. Credit
goes to all athletes for events demanding a variety of technique and brute
strength – the stone carry being a killer event and the tractor pull taking a
lot from athletes.
The
athletes dressed in Kilts and accompanied by Manchester Phoenix Pipe band gave
a real Scottish feel about the whole event as crowds sat around the arena on
straw bales with picnics securing prime viewing spots.
Andrew
Picken, Man Beast Manager said, ‘I am sure a great day has been had by all and
certainly the strongmen have loved providing such entertainment across such
varied fetes of strength’.
3rd
in the World Obstacle Course Racer Conor Hancock provided a mini man beast
assault course which saw hundreds of children having a go of the course.
A
welly throwing competition took place between men and women with Mat and Amy
winning a bottle of prosecco and whiskey each. Some braver spectators even gave
the caber toss a go with two gentlemen completing a full rotation. Children
also participated in the welly throwing competition in a boys v girls showdown.
A spokesperson
from Matlock Farm Park ‘On Sunday we hosted the very first Peak District
