Yorkshire's Strongest Man 2017 - Rumble in Rotherham!
On a weekend of unpredictable weather at Clifton Park Rotherham Show the rain didn't manage to stop Yorkshire's strongest man under 105 kg and opens competition where the title did indeed swap hands.
With a series of strength events designed to test mental and physical strength the crowd were treated to some classic World strongman events including the atlas stones for repetitions to end the competition with.
Judged by England's strongest man Phil Roberts and the World's NEW strongest Junior Paul Smith both from Sheffield, the competitors knew they were being watched by some of the best in THE sport - raising their game with some personal bests and heavy lifts.
The first event saw the log lift which started at 110 kg (17 stones). This had to be lifted from the floor then pressed above the head, increasing in weight after each successful lift. Andrew Lumley, Michael Davis and Rich Jones all made 120 kg with Richi Cross, Craig Blakeley and Mark Pearson failing a 110 kg lift.
Simon Knowles - Log press and new Yorkshire's strongest man 2017
Rich Jones, looking in great form defending his under 105 kg title from last year was pushed hard by Michael Davis who looked incredibly strong on the log press with the only man lifting 130 kg to take the event win.
In the opens category the weight started at 120 kg with all four competitors successfully completing the log press, Lee Walsh with a great effort on his second attempt to press the log. Michael Johnson looking to secure an early lead looked composed and strong to secure joint first with Sheffield's strongest man Simon Knowles.
In the deadlift (bar lifted off the floor with straight back) all under 105 competitors hit 240 kg with Michael Davis looking unstoppable with the only man to deadlift 280 kg taking the event win. In the opens Michael Johnson looked incredible as he made every lift to 340 kg with Simon Knowles hot on his heels, but looked to easily have a 360 kg deadlift in his grasp. Shaun McGowen closely followed them with a fantastic effort completing a 320 kg deadlift.
The next two events were movement events across a 20 metre distance. The Yoke and frame walk. The yoke is a frame loaded with around 280 kg of weight that is lifted by the athlete and then walked down the course. Mark Pearson and Michael Davies battling it out with Davies taking it by a whisker.
In the opens the Yoke was a massive 350 kg with Simon Knowles stride length from his 6 feet 5 inches tall frame helping him secure the quickest time of 17.12 seconds. Johnson - 24.77 secs, McGowan 43.85 secs and Lee Walsh completing 17.12 metres.
Simon Knowles looked quick in the frame walk event with another quick time of 8.42 seconds, but it wasn't enough to beat McGowan who secured a time of 8.27 secs in a super quick time. This was followed by Johnson 9.71 secs and Lee Walsh with 13.33 secs,
The atlas stones saw Rich Jones, Lumley and Davis battle it out to a nail biting finish with Davies been crowned the new 105 Yorkshire's strongest man looking pretty unstoppable and totally consistent in every event. Jones was always a threat and Lumley never gave up chasing the top two.
In the opens atlas stones event Knowles pipped Johnson's 9 reps by 1 rep to make it 10 reps taking the title of Yorkshire's strongest man 2017 to add to is current Sheffield's strongest man title. Johnson was only 1.5 points behind making for a tightly fought battle and upping the standard each year of this sought after title. Video clips here videos
