Peak District Highland
Games Report and Results– Matlock 26th
August 2018
After
been paraded into the park by Manchester Phoenix bagpipe band the strongmen
braved the rain wearing authentic highland games attire. Full of Kilts and
muscle the Nations and regions strongest men came ready to do battle across 6
gruelling events on Sunday down at Matlock Farm Park.
The
now two times Peak District Highland Games 2018 Scott Mark Lichfield dominated proceedings
during challenging weather conditions to become victorious and securing the
2018 title and prize alongside his 2017 title.
The
first event saw the giant log press consisting of a 110kg (17 stones in weight)
log that had to be pressed overhead as many times as possible. Yorkshire’s
strongest man Simon Knowles took the win on this event with 11 reps, Scott
coming in a close second. Ashton Reid and Richard Hansen coming joint third.
In the
stone throw defending champion Scott Mark Litchfield took the win with a
distance of 8 metres 70, with Zac Perry coming in second with 8 metres 60 and
Ian Phillips 8 metres 30. Matt Jackson, Nick Ducker, Dominic Helliwell, Tom Bebb, Ross
Phillips and Jake Rideout, all newcomers to the highland games gained credible
distances as they got used to the technique of the stone throw.
Other
events included the caber toss, a 12.5 tonne bus pull and a duck walk with a
160 kg stone over an awe inspiring 40 metre distance. Due to slippery ground
conditions every competitor encouraged each other to complete the distance showing
the true spirit of the sport.
