National Strongman / Strongwoman Bus Pull Championships results 2019

In one of the more unusual settings for a show Strongmen and strongwomen from as far away as Perth, Scotland, made there way down to Rotherham to South Yorkshire Transport Museum on Sunday.

In a classic world strongman tv series event the crowd were treated to a an awe inspiring demonstration of strength as human power hauled buses down a 20 metre course.
Man Beast strongman events, based in Doncaster ran the competition.

Andrew Picken founder commented ‘ we are testing the sport in different venues and agreed to this to help promote the museum and to access some amazing buses. It was a great event and we weren’t far off beating some world records'.

Mark Anglesea also from man beast commented ‘ it was great to see so many athletes step up to the plate and the women’s category saw some standout performances. Both Simon Knowles and Dave Thornton battling out a ridiculous 20 tonne bus pull in some super quick times.

Instead of catching and boarding buses they decided to pull them using a harness and rope and pure strength across 20 metres – the fastest time winning the category. First up the women’s and men’s novice bus pull category -  8 tonne of vintage double decker.

And it isn’t just the men who are made of strong stuff.  Oh no. The women put on a fantastic show of strength. Ana Polujan smashing the field and Sophie Lavender, Shannon Clifford, Emily Hansen and Kirsty Horder all putting in fantastic efforts completing the course.

Mag Torda won the novice section of the men's category.

In the intermediate section the bus named ‘JUMBO’ was used a 12 tonne behemoth used as a show bus only capable of 40 mph such is the height and drag of the vehicle.

Rob Marsh, ironically a bus driver for first bus in Sheffield, swapped the cab for the engine storming down the course to take a deserved win in 20.56 seconds across 20 meters with Arran Greaves in 2nd and Mark Thomson in 3rd.

In the opens 12 tonnes wasn’t enough for the big guys. So another bus was attached to ‘JUMBO’ creating over 20 tonnes of bus and 10 wheels of drag.

Former Yorkshire’s strongest man, Doncaster’s strongest man and Sheffield’s strongest man 6 feet 5 inches tall Simon Knowles setting the bar with a great time of 46.82 seconds, World record holder and multiple titlist Paul Smith just behind in 3rd with a 47.35 secs time, but the star of this show was yet to go.

Dave Thornton won this category with an unbelievable 36.78 secs time going 10 seconds clear of Simon. That is a world level beating performance from the holder of Rotherhams Highland game title he took in September.
